River system can be grouped into three categories on the basis of their origin:
  1. Antecedent to Himalayas
  2. After the Mahabharat
  3. After the Churia range
Antecedent rivers belong to the period prier to the rise of Himalayas. These rivers added their tributaries during or after the Himalayan origin along with the development of monsoon climate. After the formation of Mahabharat hills, the antecedent rivers changed their courses as Mahabharat stood as barriers. As a result, most of the rivers changed their cases either o the east or west. Most of these rivers were responsible to deposit the sediments in the Churia basin. The major river systems namely THE GANDAKI (deepest), THE KARNALI (longest) and THE KOSHI (biggest) belong to the antecedent group.
Rivers originating from the Mahabharat range and cutting through Churia hills come under the second group, these include Bagmati, Kankai and Kamala and etc.

The third group of rivers originates from the southern face of the Churia hills. For the purpose of commercial rafting on Saptagandaki, Saptakoshi and Karnali are in use.
Nine rivers in the three river systems are opened for tourists for river rafting. The rivers are the The Trihsuli, The Budigandaki, The Seti, The Kaligandaki, The Beri, The Sunkosi, The Tamakoshi, the Arun and the Karnali.  Rafting in any other river than these requires a special permit.
The Trishuli is the most popular river for river rafting followed by the Sun koshi. The Trishuli has been so popular because of its accessibility by road along its major part. A Trishuli trip can be easily managed to end at a place where a wild life tour at Chitwan National Park begins.
